The musical love of multitalented artist Lissu Lehtimaja is the band named Maria Gasolina founded in 2001 and consisting of eight experienced Finnish musicians. They originally started playing their own Finnish arrangements of Brazilian rhythm music classics but have evolved through three albums and hundreds of live gigs into something much more and a band which is one of the most certain ways to get dance floors crowded. A few years ago Maria Gasolina toured Brazil together with the Finnish top-notch rapper Paleface. On this trip, which was also documented into national television, they got closer than ever to the roots of their music bringing lots of influences back home.
Hits in recent years, such as ”Dooyo” based on the similarily named song three decades ago by the Somalian band Dur-Dur Band as well as “Beibe tuu” inspired by the Sudanese love song “Habibi Taa” by Alsarah & The Nubatones, have taken Maria Gasolina also to completely new directions. Therefore it might not be a surprise that their upcoming album has gotten its inspiration from especially the musical gems of Middle East as well as Eastern and Northern Africa. Since this colorful musical experience breaks so many cultural borders, the best place to enjoy it must surely be the atmospheric autumn night at the Funky Elephant festival! JK
